What to See in Favignana

Discover the history, culture and natural beauty of the Pearl of the Egadi Islands

Favignana โ€” the Pearl of the Egadi Islands

Favignana is the main island of the Egadi Archipelago, declared a Marine Protected Area in 1991 โ€” the largest in Europe. Known as the 'Butterfly Island' due to its shape, it lies about 7 km off the coast of Trapani in north-western Sicily.

The island has a rich history stretching back to ancient times. It was the site of the Battle of the Egadi Islands in 241 BC โ€” the decisive naval battle that ended the First Punic War and established Rome's supremacy in the Mediterranean. Today it is a paradise for those seeking crystal-clear waters, unspoiled nature and authentic Sicilian culture.

The Florio Tuna Factory โ€” Stabilimento Tonnara

The Stabilimento Tonnara Florio is without doubt one of the most fascinating places on the island. Built in 1859 by Ignazio Florio, it was for over a century the economic heart of Favignana and one of the most important tuna processing plants in the world.

Today it has been converted into a remarkable museum โ€” the Museo del Mare โ€” where you can explore the history of the mattanza (the traditional tuna hunt), the Florio family's industrial legacy, and the relationship between the island and the sea. The building itself, with its imposing neoclassical architecture set right on the waterfront, is a testament to the golden age of Sicilian entrepreneurship.

The Aquarium of Favignana

Located in the port area, the Aquarium of Favignana offers visitors a chance to encounter the marine life of the Egadi Islands up close. It is home to species typical of the Mediterranean Sea and provides an educational and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

The aquarium is a great stop for families and anyone interested in the unique ecosystem of the Marine Protected Area.

Villa Florio

Villa Florio is an elegant Art Nouveau villa built at the end of the 19th century by the powerful Florio family. Surrounded by a beautiful park with exotic plants, it stands as a symbol of the island's aristocratic past.

While access to the interior is limited, the villa's exterior and gardens offer a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of one of Sicily's most influential dynasties. The building sits close to the sea and the Tonnara, forming part of the grand Florio industrial and residential complex.

Fort Santa Caterina

Perched on the island's highest point, Fort Santa Caterina offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama over Favignana, the Egadi Islands and the Sicilian coast. The fortress was built by the Normans and later expanded by the Spanish and Bourbon rulers.

For centuries it served as a prison and military stronghold. Today visitors can hike up to the fort and enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the entire Mediterranean. The climb is well worth the effort, especially at sunset.

Cala Rossa

Cala Rossa is undoubtedly one of the most photographed and celebrated coves in all of Sicily. Its name โ€” 'Red Cove' โ€” comes from the reddish hue of the tufa limestone cliffs that frame its crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The cove was formed by centuries of tufa quarrying, which is how the characteristic jagged rock formations and inlets were created. Swimming here feels like being inside a natural sculpture. Cala Rossa is accessible by bike, scooter or boat and is a must-visit during any trip to Favignana.

Lido Burrone

Lido Burrone is the largest and most easily accessible beach on the island, located on the southern coast just a short bike ride from the town centre. With its fine white sand and shallow, calm waters it is ideal for families with children.

The beach is well-organised with facilities including sun lounger and parasol hire, changing rooms and a bar. Despite being the most popular beach on the island it manages to retain a relaxed, unspoiled atmosphere.
